We offer an intellectually challenging clinical and research opportunity at a high-volume center in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
Our clinical program is based at Vancouver General hospital, a high-volume acute tertiary care center that receives acute cases from throughout the lower Mainland. Fellows will participate with acute stroke treatment and post-stroke management on a dedicated 25-bed Stroke Unit, as well as with outside telephone and telestroke consultation and follow-up at the VGH Stroke Prevention Clinic. Our in-hospital consultation service sees approximately 1300 consults annually and our tPA volume is approximately 200 cases per year.
Our educational program is under the supervision of five fellowship-trained stroke neurologists and one generalist with extensive experience in vascular neurology: Drs.Oscar Benavente, Thalia Field, Sharan Mann, Colleen Murphy , Philip Teal, Samuel Yip, and Laura Wilson. In addition, we have a well developed neuroradiology department with four neurointerventionalists (two radiologists and two neurosurgeons) and work closely with our colleagues in vascular neurosurgery and cardiology.
Fellows participate in our weekly Stroke Group journal club and administrative meeting as well as weekly dedicated Tuesday academic and Wednesday clinical noon stroke rounds. There are regular directed teaching sessions for the stroke fellows.
The Stroke Fellow will spend a portion of their clinical time training in neuroradiology and/or other services as per the fellow’s interest. There are regular opportunities for both informal (and formal, depending on the candidate’s level of interest) teaching and supervision of Neurology residents. The Research program is under the direction and supervision of Drs. Oscar Benavente and Thalia Field. The candidate will spend approximately 50% of his/her time participating in ongoing and new research projects.
Previous research experience is an asset but not required. Candidates should be FRCPC-certified in adult neurology by the fellowship start date and eligible for an educational license in British Columbia.
Interested candidates may call Dr. Thalia Field at 604-822-1789 for more information.
